Using several smaller wood pieces together to create the illusion of one larger piece is a great idea, especially if you can’t find a big piece suitable.

TIPS FOR POSITIONING WOOD

1. Consider the rule of thirds when positioning the largest piece of wood. This is usually the focal point, and so needs to be aesthetically balanced.

2. Think about horizontal and vertical lines. Having wood crisscrossing can look great if done in the right way.

3. Consider how the wood flows across the aquarium. Does it look natural, or is there too much tension in the design?

4. Try to avoid having the wood rest against the aquarium glass, as this can make standard maintenance quite challenging.

5. If you have a rimless open-top aquarium, then consider having some wood protruding from the surface. This can really add a further sense of nature to the aquarium. For added effect, attach some moss that will creep over the surface, too.

PRO TIP: HOARDING!
